Imphal, July 05 2014 :
Calls for making education a 'disturbance free zone' reverberated once again with DESAM organising different campaigns on the issue today.
The student's body conducted a one-day academic discussion session with Manipur University's Centre for Manipur Studies Director Prof N Joykumar as the moderator at the central hall of DM College of Science.
The discussion session decided to form a joint committee to resolve the issues which might give disturbance to educational institutes.
Representatives from civil society organisations and intellectuals would be the members of the committee.
The session also resolved to conduct joint meetings of teachers, students, parents and guardians from time to time regarding the matter.
In his keynote address, DESAM publicity and programme secretary Prem- chand Tongbram said that the discussion session was conducted to sustain their campaign for making education a 'disturbance free zone', which kick started with a massive rally taken out from THAU Ground to Khuman Lampak on July 5, 2008 .
Although, bringing quality education is a hot topic in the State, no tangible measures and results is visible so far, he observed.
Enhancement of econo-my has a close connection with proper management of human capital and knowledge capital, Premchand said and added that education is the key to all forms of development and advancement.
Premchand further said that the root cause for moral degradation among the people of current generation and adopting the culture of 'might is right' is due to lack of proper guidance from elders and parents.
While giving her observation that different forms of disturbance are giving huge impact on children's education, All Manipur Student Guardians Organisation secretary S Sumati said that the campaign for making education a 'disturbance free zone' must be supported by one and all.
At this juncture, many students are compelled to leave education due to exorbitant school fees and rules, which are not affordable to needy students, she said.
Prof N Sadananda of Senior Citizens for Society, PANDM Executive Editor N Tomba and All Manipur Recognised Private School Welfare Association secretary Joy Khuman also spoke at the discussion session.
In another occasion, students of Churachand Higher Secondary School staged a sit-in-protest registering the demand for making education a 'disturbance free zone' at the gate of the school.
Speaking at the demonstration organised under the aegis of Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), magazine secretary of the school, Thangjam Nganba said that planting of bombs and firing on educational institutes are constantly happening in the State.
Moreover, frequent bandhs and general strikes usually disturb the smooth and regular conduct of classes, Nganba said and added that infrastructure inadequacy is another major factor which distracts the students from studies.
Urging all concerned not drag students into any issue or agitation, Nganba demanded that education be made a 'disturbance free zone' .
