Imphal, May 05 2018:
A large number of Kangleipak Student Association (KSA) members thronged Manipur Secretariat today and confronted the State police raising slogans to protest against the notification issued by the Higher Education Department, Manipur to appoint a non-Manipuri candidate as Principal of NG College in a DPC held by Manipur Public Service Commission (MPSC).
The State police blocked a sizeable number of KSA members at Secretariat gate around 2 pm today who were rushing towards the South Block of Manipur Secretariat criticizing the decision taken by the Higher Education Department.
In the confrontation, three members of KSA, Leisang Fazal, general secretary, KSA Imphal East District Committee, W Jeet, secretary, Thoubal District Committee and Vikramjit, student of Ram Lal Paul Higher Secondary School were detained by the police.
It is learnt that the students were heading towards the South Block of Secretariat to meet the Education Minister, Th Radheshyam who was not present in the office at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, in a press meet held at KSA's office, vice-president of the student body Bidyananda Shukham said that in a notification circulated by the MPSC to recruit 25 Government College Principal on July 21 last year, eligibility criteria laid down by the commission mentioned that the candidate must be a permanent resident of Manipur.
However, out of 14 recommended candidates by the MPSC a non-Manipuri candidate from West Bengal now staying in Paona Bazar was found to be listed as the appointed NG College Principal.
He further said that KSA views the selection of a non-Manipuri as an attempt to suppress the aspirations of the local people and demanded the authority concerned to look into the matter and initiate remedial action.
He also condemned the arrest of three members of KSA by the State police and demanded their release within 24 hours.
