Imphal, July 03 2011:
In view of the dilapidated condition of Khabi river banks which passes through Konthoujam AC, people of the constituency are apprehensive that the river banks would breach again resulting in extensive flooding.
After identifying four portions of the river bank which are most vulnerable, volunteers of Thangtek Awang Leikai Youth Club, Khabi Youth Club, Hidakshungba Youth Club and the villagers have been working to reinforce the vulnerable points using bamboo poles and bamboo mats.
Notably, consequent upon the recent downpour, the water current of Leimakhong river, Sajirok river, Sagolok river and Khabi river overflowed across their banks flooding several hectares of paddy fields.
Till date, many houses remain inaccessible.
Talking to a team of visiting media persons, some villagers informed that Deputy Speaker Th Lokeshore and former candidate Dr S Ratan strengthened the river banks by taking earth from a nearby area.
But the work was abandoned incomplete.
This has led to development of cracks along the river bank at many spots, the villagers said.
Fearing that these cracked portions may breach once the water level rises, the villagers sought immediate attention of the department concerned.
They further conveyed that several hectares of paddy fields are still inundated together with young paddy plants from the previous flood.
They appealed to all concerned not to politicise the work of reinforcing river banks.
The villagers, however, conveyed gratitude to MP Dr T Meinya and K Sarat for their monetary aid.
