North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned a sum of Rs 141 crore for the upgradation of Tongjei Maril also known as Old Cachar Road and the upgradation work shall begin soon, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has informed.
Gaikhangam was speaking at a reception function hosted in his honour by Khoupum Area Public Reaction Committee at Gaidimjang village, Khoupum under Tamenglong district on March 26. Gaikhangam, who also holds the portfolio of Home, observed that Tongjei Maril is one of the important roads with historical importance.
However, the road is in a deplorable condition at present.
A Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the State Government for upgradation of the road has been approved by the NEC.
The distance of the road from Bishnupur to Rengpang is approximately 92 km and the upgradation work shall begin soon since NEC has sanctioned the amount.
He pointed out that there was some mistake in the DPR submitted to the NEC as the distance of the road stretch was mentioned as only 89 km.

After the upgradation work is over, the road would be known by its original name Tongjei Maril and people of Manipur would have a shorter road to go to Silchar.
