Imphal, October 31 2017:
Like in other parts of the country, non-BJP political parties would observe Black Day on November 8 in commemoration of the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes last year which were then in circulation .
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, MPCC president TN Haokip remarked that demonetisation has severely affected all sections of the society including big companies, small scale industries, farmers, workers and common man .
Altogether 150 people died as a result of demonetisation including one Akoijam Modhu from Manipur .
The elderly man died after he collapsed while standing in queue in front of Post Office, TN Haokip said .
In protest against the adverse impacts of demonetisation upon all sections of the society, political parties which are not constituent members of NDA would observe November 8 as Black Day all over the country .
The Black Day would be observed in Manipur too under the aegis of non-BJP political parties .
After a meeting was held today at the initiative of MPCC, non-BJP political parties have agreed to observe November 8 as Black Day, said the MPCC president .
Coupled with demonetisation, introduction of GST has sparked unprecedented inflation as indicated by soaring prices of petrol and LPG .
The twin initiatives have pushed the Indian economy in doldrums .
Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who served as a member of the governing body of World Bank, Governor of Reserve Bank of India and Union Finance Minister at different points of time remarked in the Parliament that demonetisation was a 'monumental mismanagement', TN Haokip said .
He also appealed to the ruling parties which did not subscribe to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's idea of demonetisation to join the Black Day observation .
The joint meeting of different political parties held today appointed Govindas Konthoujam as chairman of the Black Day observation sub-committee, he added.
