N Sobita Devi, who lost her right limb in police firing during the people's uprising against the extension of Centre-NSCN (IM) ceasefire beyond Nagaland on June 18, 2001, has now been blessed with a new lease of life after an Imphal-based philanthropic medical unit donated an artificial limb to her.
Sobita had to get her right limb amputated owing to a bullet wound and at least 18 protestors were killed and many others were injured in it in the uprising.
"After a decade of physical difficulties to walk, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, a unit of Padma Medicare and Padma Diagnostic centre has given a new life to me.
With the new artificial limb, I can walk without supporting sticks," an emotional Sobita said.
"As I have the strength to walk almost like a normal person, I along with another June Uprising victim have decided to work our remaining days for the welfare of physically challenged persons and orphans of the State," she added.
Donating the artificial limb to Sobita is the first venture of CSR initiative and incidentally the humanitarian unit was officially inaugurated here on Friday in which Sobita was felicitated.
Managing Director of Padma Medicare Ashangbam Vivekananda Singh said the firm, as part of its CSR initiative, bore all required expenses in implanting the artificial limb on Sobita recently in Kolkata.
Singh, a medical practitioner and medical advisor of ACOAM-LUP ( Kangleipak), a civil body , said the artificial limb components are all imported from Germany and is of the highest quality.
An MD in microbiology, Singh said his firm is delighted to be part of this initiative and hoped that a small step from the firm will go a long way in creating public awareness about the need for initiating some philanthropic activities from various big business houses in Manipur.
ACOAM Lup president Indrakumar Ningombam, Vivekananda and A Mobi Singh, president of the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union attended the CSR initiative inaugural ceremony as chief guest, president and guest of honor respectively.
