Imphal, November 25 2011: The Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei, 2011 would be held under the aegis of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council from November 30 to December 8 at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound.

Announcing this at a press conference here today, Chairman of Academic Sub-Committee, Manipur State Shumang Leela Council Wareppa Naba explained that the main objective behind organizing the Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei is to promote this performing art form to the level of National theatre and spread the message of peace, unity and integrity.

Naba informed that the inaugural function of the festival on November 30 would be attended by Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly I Hemochandra as Chief Guest, President of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council Ph Gunachandra as President and Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board MLA E Dwijamani as Guest of Honour.

On the first day of the festival, Kangleipak 1709, a play based on the historical events of burning of Puyas would be performed by the artistes of Repertory of Manipur State Shumang Leela Council.

The play has been sponsored by KANGAL.

Naga Wareppa has directed the play while Chana Lukhoi has written scripts.

The festival would commence every day from 1 pm.

But prior to performances of Shumang Leelas of different groups each day, there would be demonstation on traditional performing art forms like Pena, Phamshak, Wari Leela, Moirangsai, Khubak Eshei, etc and this would be followed by discussion session.

Senior artistes would also be honoured at the occasion.

Naba conveyed that efforts are being made for having regular performance of Shumang Leela on weekend from next year.
