Sit-in demands disturbance free academic atmosphere

Volunteers of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) along with teachers, students and stakeholders staged a sit-in protest demanding disturbance free academic atmosphere, appointment of requisite Teachers and regular principals, at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai community hall, Tiddim Road here on Saturday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the sit-in, which was organised by Campaign for Disturbance Free Zone Demand Committee, DESAM president and Committee convenor Leishangthem Lamyanba urged against any form of disturbance to education including bomb threats, bandh/blockades, general strikes, cease work strike and others, while adding that education should be considered as an essential service.
Further urging for appointing teachers in schools and colleges which are facing shortages, the DESAM president also demanded appointment of regular principals for colleges and installing the requisite infrastructures, along with rationalisation of posting and transfers of teachers.
All Manipur College Teachers' Association president and Coordinating Committee chairman M Lokendra stated that Coordinating Committee for Disturbance Free Zone Education Zone was formed by 15 students, teachers and parents' organisations a few years ago and its campaign launched on June 15 this year.
He then informed that a mass meeting would be held on July 5, after which the campaign would conclude.
The campaign includes raising demands to the authorities concerned for installing requisite infrastructures at educational institutions, formulation of a transfer policy for government teachers to prevent inconveniencing the students, disbursement of salaries for teachers in time and ensuring physical infrastructures for students, he conveyed.
