Imphal, June 25 2021:
Federation of Government College Teachers' Association (FEGOCTA), Manipur on Friday reiterated its demand for immediate implementation of 7th UGC Pay and Regulations.
While urging the education minister to issue orders with regard to 7th UGC Pay and Regulations, 2018 approved by a cabinet decision on March 27 this year, FEGOCTA warned that "This is the only alternative to avoid disturbances in the online classes and examinations after June 30" .
It said that the state government has set a bad precedent by forcing FEGOCTA to resort to its fifth phase of agitation and questioned why orders for cabinet's approval for the fourth time on national policy of UGC since 2019 should not be issued.
The college teachers are performing their duties during Covid-19 pandemic from homes.
UGC policy is an old issue and FEGOCTA has been demanding its implementation since 2018 .
FEGOCTA will not accept Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse and making a mockery of the UGC policy adopted in 2017 by the union cabinet headed by the prime minister, FEGOCTA asserted.
"As experience has shown in the past, non-implementation of UGC policy would only cause further decline in the collegiate education in Manipur.
The political and bureaucratic leadership, political parties and all the stakeholders including students' organisations have collaborative roles in bringing quality collegiate education.
Putting the blame on the college teachers only reflects the attitude towards the higher education in Manipur," the college teachers' body said.
The association also questioned the reason why the college teachers are being sidelined when all other employees have been enjoying the 7th pay since 2019, adding, "It is a deeper crisis in our society, culture, politics and governance.
Without quality education a society will never move towards progress, development, peace and change" .
