Imphal, June 25 2013:
With the State Government failing to provide the required land area to Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the proposal of opening an Imphal Branch of RBI has remained deferred every now and then, and as such, the prospect of having a branch of RBI in Imphal Branch is still a distant dream.
An official of RBI, who does not want to be identified, informed Hueiyen Lanpao that at least 5 acres of land is required for setting up a branch office of RBI in Imphal.
The area should not only be safe from the security point of view, but not be too far away from the city.
The official further informed that RBI is all set to open its branch in Imphal, but the problem is with the Government of Manipur which has failed to provide the required land.
All that the State Government has been telling the officials of RBI is that a Cabinet Sub-Committee has been searching for a specific area for the purpose.
According to the latest information received, the official further disclosed, it is said that the Manipur State Government is planning to provide the said area for opening up RBI Imphal branch near the Capitol Project at Chingmeirong.
If the information is true, then, the matter of allocating the exact area of land can be assumed to be solved, and there is the possibility of opening a branch of RBI in Imphal by the end of this year, the official added.
It has been reported that the RBI has learnt from the experience of Tripura where its branch was opened only for namesake without actually providing the exact area, and as such it has decided not to open up the Imphal Branch until and unless the required land area for constructing its office is provided by the Government of Manipur.
