Imphal, November 24 2010:
For the first time in the history of Manipur, Sumang Lila, the traditional art form of theatrical acting has received extortion threat from the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Manglemnganba faction.
The oldest form of art and theatre in Manipur, Sumang Lila, received extortion letter worth 10 lakhs first on September 30, 2010 addressed to Sumang Lila Association.
The contact number on the letter was unable to get through because of which no further talks on the matter could be initiated.
Later on November 19, 2010, the news of the ban of Sumang Lila was published in all the local dailies of the State, said S Hemanta, Secretary, Manipur State Sumang Lila Council in a press meet today at Sumang Lila Singlen, Palace Compound, Imphal.
He further said that in the history of Sumang Lila, there has not been any instance of monetary demand against the council or an attempt to ban by any association.
No restriction has also been imposed on dress and ethics of the artists.
The ban this time is very unfortunate in that it attempts to suppress and restrain the rights of the artists who are lovers of the art form.
"Despite being our means of survival, the art form hardly pays but a pittance.
Just because we love the art form we intent to keep it alive.
We are just fans," expressed the visibly sad Hemanta.
He requested to the concerned party to lift the ban following the upcoming Sumang Lila festival on humanitarian ground so that performing artists may make full use of their artistic skills free from fear.
