Imphal, June 24 2021:
Beacon for Kangleichas has submitted a memorandum addressed to chief minister N Biren asking for inclusion of history, culture and tradition of various communities of the state as a mandatory subject in the school curriculum from Class VIII to XII (Arts, Commerce & Science).
The memorandum mentioned that the present school syllabus is more focused on international and national histories and neglecting history of the Manipur.
It is very unfortunate that Manipur's education system is not doing anything to imbibe in the minds of the future generations the fast disappearing culture, traditions and history of the state.
On reviewing the history syllabus, it is clear that basic history of the state is lacking in textbooks of Class VIII-XII.
Though, a textbook 'History of Manipur' is included in the syllabus of Class XIXII Arts stream, it mainly mentions Meetei community and lacks information about other communities of the state, the memo said.
Beacon for Kangleichas further urged the government to add a compulsory subject based on major incidents, culture, traditions and history of various communities of the state in the school curricula saying such a step will bring unity, peace and harmony among the communities.
