Sugnu people urge Govt to repair embankments

People at Wangoo Laipham Chithek Leikai, Sugnu kendra today urged Government to reconstruct and repair damaged river banks near the village before rainy season starts.
Banks of the Manipur river near the village were damaged during the last year's flood that destroyed many of the cultivated lands and houses in the State.
After the 2015 flood that hit the State, under the initiative of the local MLA of the time an 11 km long embankment was constructed along the river bank.
However during the flood last year, part of the embankment, about 300 metres long was damaged and as a result it flooded the surrounding houses.
About 23 houses are severely damaged, said our correspondent.
The local MLA under the local area development fund has been trying to repair the damages sections of the embankment but all efforts to repair the damaged embankment has failed as heavy vehicles causes landslide at the site.
According to a former secretary of the Wangoo Development Committee, the damaged portion of the embankments if not repaired in time will damaged over 630 pari of cultivated land.
He appealed the Government to look into the matter and take up necessary actions to repair and reconstruct the damaged embankment before rainy season to avoid further damage.
It will not be a viable option to dwell along the said river banks if the embankment is not repaired in time, he said.
