Imphal, June 21 2024:
National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM) has reiterated its commitment to achieving a peaceful and honourable resolution to the Naga political issue through negotiated means.
In a statement, NSCN-IM highlighted the historical context and challenges faced by the Nagas in their pursuit of recognition and sovereignty.
"We talk of our unique history, inherent sovereign rights, and our distinct identity and culture," the statement asserted, while underscoring the importance of these elements being acknowledged as recognized entities.
NSCN-IM also acknowledged the turbulent past, marked by confrontations across various fronts, but emphasised that negotiation alongside confrontation is crucial for a sustainable resolution.
Reflecting on past engagements with the government of India, the statement recounted significant milestones and setbacks.
It pointed out that initial attempts at resolving the Naga issue were viewed primarily through the military lens, resulting in widespread arrests, torture, and casualties among Nagas.
However, recognising the futility of a purely militaristic approach, the government of India eventually shifted towards political negotiations, culminating in the signing of a ceasefire agreement in 1997 .
NSCN-IM recalled pivotal moments such as the Framework Agreement signed on August 3, 2015, which marked a significant step towards addressing key issues including the recognition of Naga history, sovereignty, and the right to self-determination.
Despite assurances and agreements, concerns have arisen regarding the sincerity and adherence of the Government of India to these agreements, leading to scepticism among the Naga people.
"The Framework Agreement stands as a beacon of hope for peace and prosperity in our war-torn land," NSCN-IM said, asserting their unwavering commitment to upholding its principles.
They expressed concern over perceived attempts to undermine or sidestep the agreement through deceptive tactics or divisive policies.
Highlighting international support for the Naga cause, including recognition from parliamentarians, human rights organisations, and churches worldwide, NSCN-IM reaffirmed the unity of the Naga people in their pursuit of political rights and sovereignty.
It underscored that the Nagas' sovereign rights are inherent and indestructible, rooted deeply in their history and affirmed by international understanding.
In conclusion, NSCN-IM invoked a steadfast faith in their cause, proclaiming, "Small and weak we may be, but ho human force can defeat us because God is at the centre of our movement" .
The outfit reiterated its commitment to see the movement through to a just and timely conclusion, firmly believing in the righteousness of their struggle for political self-determination and sovereign rights.
