Imphal, January 21 2025:
The Manipur Ex-MLA's Welfare Association has called for immediate efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the state, urging both the Central and state governments to resolve the ongoing conflict that has plagued the state for the past 20 months.
During a general body meeting held on January 18, the Association ap pealed to all communities to abandon violence and work collectively toward harmony, while also pledging their role in bridging gaps and fostering mutual trust among the people.
Informing this, a statement of the Association expressed grave concern over the prolonged conflict between the Kuki-Zo and Meetei communities, which has caused immense suffering across all sections of society.
The strife has displaced over 60,000 people, forcing them into relief camps with inadequate facilities.
The lack of basic amenities, including sufficient space, privacy, healthcare, and education for children, has led to mental health challenges, with some residents tragically succumbing to depression or committing suicide.
The economic repercussions of the crisis have also been devastating.
The state has recorded the highest inflation rate in the country for two consecutive years, compounded by significant capital flight.
The Association rioted that rebuilding the state's economy would be a massive challenge and stressed the urgency of restoring stability to prevent further damage.
In its appeal, the Association called upon leaders from all communities, particularly those involved in civil society organisations, to step out of their comfort zones and actively contribute to peace-building efforts.
It emphasised that fostering coexistence and preserving the unity and integrity of the state is a moral duty shared by all communities.
The Association further encouraged citizens, whether residing in the hills or the valleys, to play a vital role in restoring the harmony that existed before the violence began on May 3, 2023.The Association also voiced disappointment over the lack of effective intervention from both the Centre and state governments in addressing the crisis.
It urged the authorities to take decisive action to bring lasting peace and stability to the state without further delay.
As part of the meeting, the Association also mourned the loss of 12 former members of the Legislative Assembly and a former Secretary of the Manipur Legislative Assembly in the past two years.
They also extended their sympathies to the families and loved ones of all victims of the ongoing violence.
A two-minute standing silence was observed as a mark of respect.
The Manipur Ex-MLA's Welfare Association reiterated their commitment to acting as mediators and confidence-builders among communities, with the ultimate goal of achieving lasting peace and tranquillity in the state.
