Imphal, November 20 2021:
Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) successfully conducted north east India's first ABO incompatible kidney transplant recently.
Addressing the media in this regard at SHRI conference hall on Saturday, managing director Dr Kh Palin said that the ABO incompatible kidney transplantation was conducted on October 26.With the successful transplantation, people of the state will no longer face the hardships of not getting kidney donor with compatible blood groups, he said.
The transplantation was carried out through different treatment protocols using modern technology.
The patient has been discharged from the hospital after one week.
The patient is a 28 years old woman and the donor is her 54 years old mother.
Though the transplantation cost is same with normal kidney transplantation, the actual cost is higher since it would require pre-transplant treatment, he said.
Around 2.2 lakh patients need kidney transplantation every year in the country.
Out of these, only 7500 patients get kidney transplantation in 250 centres.
Among them, 90 per cent donors are living people and the remaining 10 per cent get kidney from deceased people.
The institution is making concerted efforts to increase the rate of deceased organ donation, he said.
Dr Palin further said that the institute conducted its first kidney transplantation on August 14,2016.Since then, the institute has conducted kidney transplantation on 56 patients till date.
The ABO incompatible kidney transplantation is the 54th transplantation of the institute, he informed.
Joining the media briefing, SHRI medical superintendent Dr S Jugindro said that earlier patients require donor with same blood group and as a result, many patients are forced to spend their life through dialysis and it adds to the burden of the family.
Now, with the success of ABO incompatible kidney transplantation, the state will see major improvement in the healthcare sector, he said.
The number of hospitals which can carry out ABO incompatible kidney transplant is very few in the country and not all of them also attain success in the process.
Following the first transplantation, which was a success, the institute is now confident that they can carry out similar surgery in future, he said.
The north east's first ABO incompatible kidney transplantation was carried out by a team of the institute which include consultant urologist & renal transplant surgeon Dr Somorendro Paonam, consultant urologist Dr Mahele Maharabam; consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon Dr Devendra Khwairakpam; and transfusion medicine consultant Dr Heirangkhongjam Ranjana.
Nephrologist director and consultant Dr Guliver Potsangbam led the team.
