Students storm Education (U) office

While demanding the government to lower the college admission fee, students of 12 colleges under Manipur University stormed the office of Education (U) at Keishampat Nityaipat Chuthek here on Monday.
The agitating students also tried to lock the office of Education (U) but foiled by the police.
On receiving report of the students' protest, a police team led by Imphal West SP rushed in and stopped the students from locking the office.
There was a brief confrontation between the police and the protesting students.
Later, the two came to an understanding and two student representatives were allowed to go and talk with the officials of Education (U) .
Speaking to media persons in this regard, Imphal College Students' Union general secretary Oinam Premdash contended that the present government is not concerned about the welfare of students as it has been ignoring their repeated demands for lowering the college admission fees.
It is unfortunate that the authorities hiked the admission fee amidst the trying times of Covid-19 pandemic, he denounced, while pointing out that admission fees in several universities have been lowered due to the pandemic.
Stating that hiking of admission fees for colleges under Manipur University is illogical, Premdash asserted that inclusion of sports and cultural fee should be stopped till there is conducive environment.
The education minister who endorsed increasing the state revenue by hiking admission fees from students during the troubled times of Covid-19 should be replaced, he demanded, while cautioning that the students will stage intense form of protest if the government and authorities concerned failed to lower the college admission fees at the earliest.
