Imphal, February 19 2024:
While referring to an order of the High Court of Manipur instructing the government to send reply to the Ministry of Tribal Affair within a period of one year, which is expiring on March 28, 2024, Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union has submitted a memorandum to chief minister N Biren Singh urging him to recommend to the centre for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list of the Indian Constitution.
In a letter addressed to the CM, Union secretary (administration) Mutum Churamani Meetei informed that Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) in partnership with Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM), World Meetei Council (WMC), Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) and Global Meetei Diaspora (GMD) initiated a Mass Missed Call Campaign under the theme of "Campaign for a better Manipur with equal status" beginning from November 20, 2023 and concluded successfully on December 31 the same year to rally for inclusion of Meetei (Meitei) in the ST list of Indian Constitution.
Conveying that there was massive support of the people to the cause, the secretary pointed out that it is evident from a total of 8, 83,650 missed calls received that the campaign had overwhelming response from the public.
"Hence, we humbly would like to request you to kindly recommend for inclusion of Meetei (Meitei) in the ST list of Indian Constitution," the secretary added.
