Police on Friday detained at least 40 volunteers of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) after they tried to storm the state assembly now in session to press their demand for introduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
Some 80 volunteers of JCILPS, including meira paibis coming from various directions in different vehicles tried to submit memorandums to the Chief Minister and the MLAs on the demand for implementation of ILP.
But they were stopped by police in Thangmeiband area and detained 40 of them.
The police picked up 40 JCILPS volunteers on the charge of attempting to storm the state assembly, convenor of JCILPS, Ibotombi Khuman told reporters at DM College campus here.
He said the JCILPS volunteers were only trying to submit memorandums to the ministers and MLAs.
He vowed that JCILPS will not remain quiet until and unless its demand is not met by the Government.
Ibotombi recalled that the state assembly in its previous session had taken a resolution on implementing ILP in the state.
Despite passing of resolutions twice by the assembly, the Government has been ignoring the demand for implementation of ILP, he said and questioned the significance of the resolution taken by the 60 legislators.
The JCILPS leader demanded the lawmakers and MLAs to introduce ILP in the state under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulations, 1873 or to make a suitable law to restrict entry of outsiders in the state.
