Centre accused of plotting Manipur's disintegration
Source: Chronicle News Service

Jiribam, July 17 2024: Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has accused government of India of repeatedly attempting to undermine Manipur's integrity, a fact widely acknowledged but cannot be allowed to materialise.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting held Tuesday at Smart Society conference hall at Babupara, here, where leaders of different communities gathered to discuss the prevailing situation in Jiribam, COCOMI assistant coordinator Joy-chandra Konthoujam, who is also the UCM president, informed that the meeting aimed at cementing unity among all the communities and to pave the way for restoring peace in the restive border district.

He said that the crisis in Manipur is caused by Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists in collusion with central security forces with the ultimate objective to supress the indigenous Meetei people.

The government of India can easily put an end to the crisis, but it is deliberately prolonging the conflict in pursuance of its hidden agenda, alleged the assistant coordinator.

Asserting that as Kukis are foreigners the indigenous people of Manipur cannot accept and tolerate their demand for separate administration within the state, Joychandra mentioned that Manipur with its 5000-year history joined the Indian Union with hope of peace and stability contrary to which there has been consistent campaign to balkanise Manipur.

He then called upon all the indigenous communities to unite and neutralise the nefarious agenda of Chin-Kuki narco-terrorists.

He also demanded an immediate halt to deforestation activities, poppy cultivation, and unauthorised establishment of Kuki villages, so as to ensure peace prevails in the state.

The people of Manipur desire implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is the rule and law in India.

Through this process, all communities in Manipur can live together in peace, Joychandra expressed and emphasised the need for everyone to contribute for a united and progressive Manipur.

He also contended that refusal by the security advisor and the DGP to deploy additional forces in Jiribam for preventing unwanted incidents clearly hint at imposition of Article 355 in Manipur.

The meeting was also attended by AMMOCOC Jiribam District president Abdus Sattar, Jiribam District Reconciliation Forum spokes-person Mathew Kamei, RK Sanatombi Devi Vidyalaya principal S Maniton and Jiribam District Reconciliation Forum convenor Promotes Das as presidium members.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over defunct of government offices in Jiribam, COCOMI urged authorities concerned to upgrade Jiribam to a full-fledged district.

Addressing the media persons near Jiribam PWD office after inspection of government offices in Jiribam by COCOMI Women Wing and Students' Wing on Wednesday, Joychandra said that during visit to five government offices, they observed most of them are non-functional.

He emphasised the need for the government to ensure proper operation of the said offices.

Stating that districts are created for efficient administration, he pointed out that establishing Jiribam district has lost its purpose as the administrative tasks is being managed from Imphal.

As such, Joychandra urged the government to acknowledge such disparity and address the same.

He pointed out the absence of district transport officer at the District Transport Office in Jiribam, which has been operational since June 10, 2022, underscores negligence on the part of the officer consequently meriting suspension to assert government's commitment to accountability and efficiency.

Joychandra also emphasised that the government must address the deplorable and non-functional state of government offices in Jiribam district.

He urged the authorities to ensure these offices become operational, thereby making Jiribam a fully functional district headquarters.

He also noted that during the inspection of government offices, including the Education Department, Agriculture, Fisheries, and PWD, only Education Department appeared to be functional.

He said no staff could be found at the PWD office, and censured the employees for defying government orders.
