Imphal, May 17 2022:
With all the rivers in the state flowing in full spate due to incessant rainfall for several days, the state government has opened three gates of Ithai barrage to prevent flood.
Responding to the media during an event held at Sangaithel here on Tuesday, water resources minister Awangbow Newmai informed that the government has opened three gates of Ithai barrage and is ready to open all the five gates if the need arises.
The department is taking up necessary measures to prevent flood in the light of incessant rainfall that the state is experiencing for the past several days.
Certain critical zones have been identified and temporary measures to prevent flooding have been taken up accordingly along with local clubs, he said.
Awangbow further said that Jiribam is also experiencing flood situation now and the department is taking up necessary steps to address the situation.
Since flood hardly occurs in Jiribam, the department had some delay in taking up necessary steps, conceded the minister, adding that disaster management authority is providing relief measures to affected families and a flood monitoring team has been stationed in the district to assess the ground situation with a 24/7 functioning control room.
