Thoubal, January 17 2025:
In a bid to address growing concerns about communal tensions and the spread of misinformation, a meeting was held at the chief minister's office attended by representatives of United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC) and the security advisor Kuldiep Singh, on Friday.
According to a statement issued by UMPC, the meeting focused on several critical issues, including strengthening communal harmony, addressing misinformation and promoting peaceful coexistence, while stressing on the urgency of building mutual respect and understanding among the different communities in Manipur.
During the meeting, the UMPC proposed creating platforms for dialogue, cultural exchanges, and collaborative community initiatives as a means of promoting peaceful coexistence, the statement informed, noting that such moves are crucial for dissolving misunderstandings and fostering a unified vision for the state's progress.
Recognising the detrimental effects of misinformation and hate speech on social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, the discussion emphasised the urgent need for intervention, said the release.
While pointing out the need for immediate intervention to address the issues, the UMPC recommended the establishment of a monitoring framework to identify and counter misinformation, along with collaboration with social media teams to take timely action against harmful content.
It also urged the government to conduct public awareness campaigns to educate users on the risks of spreading false information.
The UMPC suggested that inter-community events be organised, in order to encourage grassroots-level participation in peace building activities and implementing educational programmes that celebrate the state's cultural diversity.
While urging Kuldiep Singh and the state government to prioritise these issues and take concrete steps toward addressing them, the UMPC expressed its willingness to collaborate on future initiatives that would ensure lasting peace and development in the region, the release added.
