Imphal, November 15 2015:
Tribal Rights Demand Committee, Jiribam (TRDCJ) urged the Manipur Student Federation, Jiribam Unit (MSFJU) to refrain from individually summoning any signatories to the joint memorandum for the up-gradation of Jiribam to Hill district.
In a statement, TRDCJ Chairman R Hmar said that if there was a need for a discussion regarding the objectives of the Hill district demand, then all the signatories should be informed.
The TRDCJ has threatened to take the matter to the responsible authority if there is any attempt to isolate and coerce a particular signatory from voicing opinion.
The Committee said the summoning will be considered as "undemocratic" .
He claimed that the up-gradation of Jiribam to the hill district is the wish of the people of Jiribam and supported by various civil organisation leaders on the democratic principles stating that "Jiribam is hill area and the desire to upgrade Jiribam to Hill district is in line with the hill area status of Jiribam" .
R Hmar said "any organisation supporting hill district had done so purely on democratic principles and there is no reason to question why unless the organisations want to state their reasons." The fundamental and human rights of every individual or civil society deserve respect, he added.
