Ukhrul, July 13 2021:
In the midst of growing human population pressure and demand for infrastructural development, there is one pressing problem.
And that is accelerating loss of plant and animal species.
But without these species, human race can't survive.
This was the very message that Shangshak Police conveyed through its community outreach programme which took place in the form of a tree plantation drive organised at the district's premier educational institute Patkai Christian Academy (PCA) campus and its surrounding areas here on Tuesday.
"We are taking up this plantation drive under the motto, 'Our survival depends on survival of plants and animals' because we want to convey the message that these species are sustaining human life on the earth," said Shangshak PS OC H Chiphang, who led the plantation drive at PCA along the Ukhrul-Imphal road.
He said that the rationale for conducting the drive is to do their bit to help mitigate the growing environmental crisis in the district.
"Today, the whole world is grappling to adapt to the irreversible climatic change and in this struggle, planting of more trees is the need of the hour.
So, on our part, we took up this onus," he continued.
He said that the drive was taken up in collaboration with Kamjong Forest department and PCA authority.
"Indigenous plants like Leihao, Uningthou, Thuga ching, and flowering shrubs have been planted in and around the PCA site and along NH-202," he said, while adding that the choice of tree species was made as suggested by the forest department.
Chiphang said that by planting ornamental trees they wanted the trees, when fully grown, to match with the scenic beauty of PCA campus and to also adorn the highway stretch.
"So that everyone who comes to Ukhrul on this road will certainly witness the beauty of the nature," he exuded.
Among others, Range Forest Officer (RFO) Kamjong range Worthem Moulthou (MO) and PCA principal Kamlal Khongsai also took part in the plantation drive.
