Inaugural Sangai Day observed

The inaugural function of Sangai Day, dedicated to Manipur's state animal, was observed at Manipur Zoological Garden Hall, Iroisemba on December 10 .
The event organised by Sangai First Foundation (SFF) in collaboration with the Forest Department's Wildlife Wing was attended by Manipur State Wetlands Authority Technical Committee chairman Dr Kh Samungou Singh, Kumbi College retired principal K Jugeshor and Manipur Zoological Garden director L Biramangol Singh as presidium members, informed an SFF media release, adding that K Jugeshor outlined the objectives of the landmark day, and its role in spreading awareness about Wildlife conservation.
He also announced plans for a year-long programme targeting schools and colleges across the state to inspire the younger generations take proactive role in conserving rare species like the Sangai.
On the other-hand, Dr Kh Samungou highlighted the historical significance of December 10, 1954, when a resolution was adopted to establish a sanctuary for the Sangai deer, spanning 50 sq.
km., as documented in the Manipur Board for Wildlife's Gazette on February 2, 1955.He commended the trustees of SFF for initiating the observance of this day.
The release further stated that SFF trustee Salam Prasanta Singh, range forest officers Gyanic Thangjam and Georgy Yumnam, veterinary officer Dr L Sharatchandra also, shared their experiences and insights on Sangai conservation and the efforts undertaken by them.
The event was also participated by Manipur Zoological Garden officials, .environmentalists, SFF trustees, well-wishers, and wildlife volunteers.
