CPI demands scrapping of AFSPA

Demanding the government to scrap AFSPA from the state, Communist Party of India (CPI) Manipur State Council has warned of launching intense agitation if the Centre continues to impose the black law.
Addressing a press meet at Irawat Bhawan here on Friday, CPI state secretary L Sotinku-mar said that the Oting massacre was carried out mainly due to the immunity granted to security forces under the AFSPA.
Security forces have killed numerous innocent civilians under the shadow of AFSPA in the state.
Manorama murder, Langjing massacre and Malom Massacre are few examples of army brutality towards the people of the state under the Act, he said.
CPI has been standing against the draconian law since the 80s.The Nagaland incident has reminded the series of movements launched by CPI against the Act.
They submitted several memorandums to the Prime Ministers of India of multiple governments.
Many of the par-ty's workers sustained injuries and got jailed during these movements.
The party made a strong proposition to Congress during the SPF government which resulted in removal AFSPA from seven assembly segments of Imphal area, he said and added that the party will resume the movement now.
Indian Association of Lawyers secretary Samungou said that the chief minister of the state should take the same stand of his counterparts of Nagaland and Meghalaya.
The state government should bring up the demand to scrap AFSPA, he said.
BJP should translate assurance of removing AFSPA it made in its manifesto of 2017 assembly elections.
The state government can remove the Act if it is committed enough to protect the lives of the people in the state.
