Imphal, November 10 2024:
Thadou Community International (TCI) has strongly condemned the killing of Sapam Sophiya Devi, a woman farmer belonging to the Meetei community, at Saiton village in Bishnupur district on Saturday by suspected Kuki armed militants.
In a statement, TCI said that the latest killing occurred just two days after the attack on Zairon Hmar village in Jiribam on November 7, where another woman, Sangkim, was killed by suspected Meetei militants.
TCI has called for justice in both cases, urging both the Central and state governments to take stronger, concerted measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
The organisation warned that failure to address the issue effectively could lead to the situation spiralling out of control, resulting in large-scale violence throughout the state.
In its statement, TCI emphasised the urgency of collaborative efforts among government authorities, community leaders, and the public from all affected communities to work towards lasting peace.
The organisation expressed deep concern that the ongoing violence in Manipur is continuing at the cost of innocent lives, which is a matter of shame for India as a nation.
The statement also highlighted that Manipur, with a population of around 30 lakhs, had yet to recover from the ethnic violence of the 1990s when conflicts between different groups were widespread.
The current violence, which erupted on May 3, 2023, in areas near Churachandpur and Bishnupur, has only added to the state's instability.
TCI stressed that Manipur, being a multi-ethnic society, must recognise the futility of violence and called for unity among its people.
The organisation urged all communities to raise their voices and join hands to end the cycle of violence.
Blaming one another or seeking support from other groups will not solve the problem and that it is essential for the people of the state to take responsibility for their own peace and future, TCI contended.
The statement also called upon the people of the state to reject violence and work towards building a society based on mutual respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to the common good.
TCI urged everyone to stand together with courage, wisdom, and vision, declaring that enough is enough and calling for peace to once again reign in the state.
