Senapati, July 10 2014:
The 27th 'Onae Reh Da', the commemoration of the unfortunate incident of torture of civilians by security personnel during the infamous 'Operation Bluebird' way back in July 1987 was observed at Taphou Onaeme around 5 km from here yesterday.
It may be recalled that following an attack on an AR outpost at Oinam Hill by NSCN (IM) killing nine soldiers and snatching away huge quantities of arms and ammunition on 9th July in 1987, the counter insurgency operation codenamed 'Operation Bluebird' was launched on 11th July 1987 .
During the operation, many civilians were either killed or torture, their properties destroyed, schools dismantled, women sexually harassed and abused, thus resulting in gross human rights violation.
The surrounding villages of Oinam were also adversely affected in the operation.
Along with paying homage to the departed souls, villagers of Taphou Onaeme reflected upon the past struggle and sufferings during the commemorative event.
Many speakers also shared how the towering leaders of the village paid heavy price by laying down their lives to save the people and land.
Their sacrifice should be a motivation force to unite us all the time, the speakers exhorted.
