Imphal, September 08 2024:
Even as the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) announced suspension of its indefinite public emergency' declared in response to recent drone and rocket attacks that claimed the lives of some civilians and left indigenous Meetei population feeling fearful and vulnerable, the government of Manipur on Sunday issued order for closure of schools, colleges for two days.
Citing prevailing law and order situation in the state, separate orders issued by Education (S) director and Education (Higher and Technical) joint secretary announced that government, aided, private and central schools under the Education Department as well as colleges in the state would remain close on September 9 and 10.On the other-hand, COCOMI explained that it had declared indefinite public emergency, particularly affecting public places, schools, colleges and markets, to shield the people of Manipur from threats posed by Kuki narco-terrorists.
However, considering appeals from various student bodies and related organisations, as well as the ongoing examinations, COCOMI has decided to suspend the public emergency.
Inconveniences faced by public and daily wage workers are also some factors for keeping the agitation on hold for the time being, a COCOMI release reasoned and also appealed to people in 'red' zone areas to maintain top vigil.
Educational institutions, markets and public places in these zones should in particular exercise extreme caution, it stressed.
