MACFI's Chak-hao attracts visitors

Poireiton Chak Hao, a kind of black scented rice which is widely used in Manipur since time immemorial in the traditional feast and festivities, etc, has become one of the main attractions in the ongoing 1st Assam International Agri-Horti Show at Khanapara in Guwahati, Assam, reports reaching here said.
The Poireiton Chak Hao along with turmeric, ginger and wild orchids of Manipur are on display in the Manipur stall run by Imphal-based Manipur Chamber of Foreign Trade and Industry (MACFI) stall in the 4 day-long Agri-show which was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today.
Manipur has two stalls in the ongoing agri-horti show.
One stall belongs to MACFI while the other is that of State Horticulture department.
The state horticulture department stall is displaying mainly horticultural crops such orange and pineapple, etc.
A MACFI representative from Guwahati said over phone that most of the visitors enquire about the Poireiton Chak Hao.
"So, we like to encourage such kind of crops production in Manipur," he added.
The Poireiton Chak Hao in Manipur is confined to serving as delicacy in local feast and festivities.
It is said that the rice variety has high protein contain without sodium and so it can be recommended to sick people like protein calorie mall absorption syndrome and hypertension, etc.
The price of the rice variety in Manipur is sold at around Rs 90-100 per kg in the local market against Rs 300-400 a kg outside the state.
It may be mentioned that Directorate of Agriculture & Directorate of Horticulture & Food Processing, Government of Assam and Assam Agricultural University in association with Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Assam Horticultural Society, has been organizing International Agri-Horti Show'.
The Show has been happening since the year 1995 and for the first time it is going international this year.
The four day Show will be the largest Conference cum Exposition on agriculture and horticulture sector ever organized in India's North-East region.
