Imphal, January 07 2022:
Student activists belonging to AMSU, MSF, KSA and SUK staged protest demonstration on Friday in front of the western gate of Kangla Fort here against the petition filed by West Bengal based organisation Amar Bengali to the Supreme Court challenging implementation of ILP system in Manipur.
As part of the protest, students burnt effigy of Amar Bengali general secretary Bakul Chandra Roy and shouted several slogans including'Amar Bengali Down Down', 'Manipur Meeyamgee Laibak Meetopna Leppa Yaroi', etc.
As police tried to disperse the protesting students, an intense scuffle broke out between the two sides but police managed to herd off the students till BT road and picked up five students.
The students picked up by police were JCILPS students' wing co-conveners Maibam Jalesh and Laishangkhong Fazal and JCILPS students' wing functionaries Harley Laishram, Salam Franamendos and Hujahiid Makakmayum.
Meanwhile, JCILPS students' wing convener Haobijam Challamba said that it was very unfortunate that Amar Bengali filed a petition challenging implementation of ILP system in Manipur at a time when people of the state are voicing against incomplete ILP system.
The committee had earlier expressed unwillingness against filing of the petition to the Supreme Court and hence launched Friday's agitation, he told media persons at its Keishampat office after the protest and demanded immediate and unconditional release of all the students arrested by police.
He also said that committee will continue to stage democratic forms of agitations till the Bengal based organisation withdrew the petition.
He also said that the committee takes arrest of protestors by police seriously and the police action against protestors was indeed an invitation for another round of protest relating to ILP implementation in the state.
