Imphal, August 06 2024:
Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has urged the Union government to ensure the safety and security on the state's two national highways.
Highlighting the critical role these highways play in the state's connectivity and economy in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, the MP emphasised the urgent need for uninterrupted and secure travel on these vital routes.
During his address, MP Sanajaoba outlined the importance of the two national highways that serve as lifelines for Manipur.
The first, National Highway 2 (Imphal-Dimapur road), connects Manipur to Assam via Nagaland, providing a crucial link to the rest of India.
The second, National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road), also connects Manipur with Assam, facilitating trade and commerce, he said.
"These two national highways are essential for the survival and prosperity of Manipur," the MP stated and expressed deep concern over frequent disturbances, blockades, and disruptions plaguing these highways and causing severe hardships for the people of Manipur.
Leishemba Sanajaoba, who is also the titular king of Manipur, detailed wide-ranging impacts of these disturbances, including economic hardships resulting from disrupted trade and commerce, the supply chain of essential goods, and subsequent price hikes and scarcity of items.
He also highlighted inconveniences faced by passengers, including delays, cancellations, and extended travel times, which affect daily life, education, and healthcare access.
The parliamentarian further pointed out the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by shortages of essential items like food, medicine, and fuel while noting that the frequent disturbances also deter tourists and potential investors, hindering the state's economic growth and development.
Concluding his appeal, the MP urged the Union government to take immediate and effective measures to ensure that these two national highways remain safe and secure throughout the year.
"The people of Manipur should be able to move freely without any fear of disturbance or blockade," he emphasised, and proposed sustained efforts to protect the state's vital infrastructure and ensure the well-being of its residents.
