Chingakham Shyamjai, who is the newly elected interim president of Manipur People's Party (MPP), has informed that the party will be fielding candidates in the upcoming election to local civic bodies, which is likely to be held either in September or October this year.
Addressing a press meet held at MPP office near Polo Ground here on Sunday, Shyamjai said that being a regional party, MPP has been existing rather modestly.
However, he assured of strengthening the party in his tenure, while informing that the party will be contesting the upcoming local civic bodies' elections to win maximum number of seats, in addition to electing a regular president of the party within a year, if possible.
Stating that his appointment as the party's interim president is not of a permanent nature, Shyamjai said that the party's central committee had elected him for a year.
As such, it was surprising to witness some members of the party approaching the court citing his election to be invalid.
Nonetheless, a meeting of the central committee will be convened before July 16.There is no pressure in this regard, he said, while informing members of the central committee to renew their identity cards which have not been done so since 2019.Senior leader Konthoujam Krishnachandra informed that representatives of MPP will be attending a political forum of regional parties.
He then said that Shyamjai was elected as interim president after a proper election and expressed that defeated members filed a case in the matter.
The senior leader further conveyed that the election was conducted by CEO Manipur as per the direction of the court and thus, it is useless to lobby in the matter.
As such, he appealed to all concerned to extend their cooperation in strengthening the party instead.
