Imphal, July 03 2013:
Suspected cadres of a militant group said to be active in Noney Bazar opened indiscriminate gunfire today at Noney Bazar in Tamenglong district today.
A source said the militants took advantage of the brief absence of security forces deployed in Noney area.
The militants fired indiscriminately for about 10 minutes.
It may be recalled that six NSCN-K cadres were killed by 10 Assam Rifles reportedly in an encounter on June 22 last.
The source speculated that NSCN-K cadres might have opened the gunfire to show disgruntlement over the June 22 incident.
Meanwhile, another source said that the unidentified gunmen opened fire towards a foot patrolling party of CRPF personnel.
There is no report of casualty.
Troops of 10 Assam Rifles and CRPF personnel launched a manhunt in the area following the incident, though there is no report of any arrest made till the time of filing this report late in the evening.
No further incident has been reported though.
