Imphal, November 02 2024:
The ongoing turmoil in the state is not merely a clash between the Kuki and Meetei communities but rather points to a deeper geopolitical game, suggested retired Manipur University history professor N Joykumar.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 67th birth anniversary observance of Irengbam Chaoren held at Manipur University on Saturday, Prof Joykumar questioned the stoic silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has yet to address the conflict even after 17 months of sustained unrest.
This silence, he proposed, may indicate underlying geopolitical motives shaping the crisis in the state.
During his speech, Prof Joykumar delved into the historical context of Manipur's armed movement, tracing it back to the mid-1960s following Manipur's merger with India in 1949 .
He emphasised that the primary issue now is to understand why numerous Manipuris felt compelled to take up arms, a sentiment that continues to resonate in the current crisis.
The professor further highlighted the contributions of various leaders who advocated for the unity and integrity of Manipur, envisioning it as a once independent nation in Southeast Asia and the current northeastern region of India.
Reflecting on Chaoren's philosophy, Prof Joykumar noted the importance of the younger generation in preserving the community's values and integrity.
He lamented the current fragmentation of Manipur's social fabric, describing how centuries-old fraternal bonds have been severely strained by current unrest.
Although Manipur's territory remains intact, its unity and integrity have been deeply compromised.
Prof Joykumar underscored the need for undisturbed education, emphasising that human resources are essential for development.
"A change in mindset is the need of the hour," he stated, calling for unity amidst the existential threat facing the community.
Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust member Ph Deban recalled Chaoren's qualities, describing him as a respectful and well-mannered individual with a deep love for Manipur.
By age of 17, Chaoren was already involved in public movements aimed at realising a self-reliant Manipur.
Known for his commitment to his homeland, his contributions remain a source of inspiration.
Stating that the aim of commemorating Chaoren's birth anniversary is to spread his message and instil his philosophy in the younger generations, Deban also elaborated on Chaoren's dedication to unity among Manipur's indigenous communities and his advocacy for development, self-reliance, environmental conservation, and stronger people-to-people ties.
One notable gesture exemplifying his respect for his homeland was his practice of paying respects upon re-entering Manipur, treating it as a sacred space.
Deban expressed hope that Chaoren's vision would inspire the younger generation to cultivate love for their motherland and work towards a prosperous Manipur.
From this year onwards, the Trust has begun annual activities under the theme "Know Your Motherland" to promote Chaoren's legacy, educate the public about his life and contributions, and deepen knowledge about Manipur's heritage.
An essay competition focused on the civilisational, political, societal, economic, and cultural history of Manipur was organised as part of these initiatives.
The winners were honoured at the anniversary event.
Winners of the essay competition organised on the theme "Roles of Indigenous People in Protecting the Integrity of Manipur" were also felicitated during the event.
The event, organised by the Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust, drew notable attendees, including social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram, DMU political science associate professor Dr Arambam Noni, Trust president Irengbam Bilashini, Lamlang Hupi Chothe village chief Thao Jatra Chothe, Kabui Union Manipur president Dr Heera Kabui, Chiru Tribe Union NEI representative N Chiru, Koireng Youth Organisation Manipur president R Boipu Koireng, and Meitei Pangal Khunthok Ningsing Thouram Committee convenor Arshad Beisamayum.
