Imphal, February 01, 2013:
The Board of Secondary Education Manipur has clarified allegations regarding Bengali script text books being used by Class IX students in CBSE affiliated schools in the State.
In a statement, BSEM secretary, L Rajmohan Singh stated that the BSEM had already informed the CBSE that conversion from Bengali to Meetei Mayek is being taken up phase wise (1 class in a year) starting with Class I & II in 2006.It also pointed out that the first batch of Class X students would be taking the HSLC exam in Meetei Mayek in 2015. The Regional Officer, Guwahati of CBSE was specifically informed that Manipuri textbooks for class IX in Meetei Mayek should be introduced from 2013 session and those of Class X from the next year, it clarified.
The statement further pointed out that the BSEM had also informed Boards of Secondary Education of NE States, including Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram regarding the conversion from Bengali to Meetei Mayek indicating year wise detailed conversion plan.
Maintaining that the Meetei Mayek script text books for Class IX is being introduced from the academic session 2013-14, i.e., from session beginning in April 2013 for CBSE affiliated schools, the BSEM statement wondered how DESAM volunteers could have expected Class IX students of the current year (2012-13) to be studying text books in Meetei Mayek.
The BSEM secretary also appealed all concerned student unions, civil society organisations or any other concerned groups, to crosscheck facts prior to issuing press notes which could have an adverse effect on the credibility and prestige of the Board.
