Imphal, December 31 2018:
In a bid to improve the employment prospect and economy of the State, Kanglei Economic Development Organisation (KEDO) inaugurated a popcorn plaza today.

Speaking at the event, KEDO general secretary Sur Thokchom said that the organisation was established on April 20, 2007 with the aim of developing work culture, improving the economy of the State and to inculcate the notion of becoming self reliant.
He continued that KEDO volunteers have been helping in guarding the items and goods of the women vendors during the night apart from helping in transportation as well.
KEDO volunteers/members began selling tea, sugarcane juice and even Paani Puri, he said adding that the newly opened pop corn plaza will be manned by KEDO members who have received two years training.

He then donated 600 plastic waste bins to KEDO so as to help in keeping the Keithel neat and clean in light of the coming New Year.
Samarjit appealed to the public to throw their wastes in the respective coloured dustbins so that they can be transported to the waste management processing unit of Salai.
He also added that if KEDO members bring the wastes to the waste processing unit, they may even be paid a small sum.
On the other hand, he said that the tension which erupted between women street vendors and the women who have proper spaces at the Keithel, is rather unfortunate and claimed that Salai will work out a solution for the women street vendors at the earliest.
Inspector N Ingocha said that the responsibility of keeping the Jma Keithel neat and clean, also falls on the public as well and not only the Government or the police.
He urged the public not to rely only on the police for eradicating petty crimes from the Keithel and appealed to the women vendors to regard themselves as guardians of the Keithel as well and to work together in bringing development to the Keithel.
He also condemned the tension between the women vendors and the street vendors yesterday and added that there are also many street vendors in other parts of the world but they operate within a specific time frame.
He.
explained that the authority concerned allows the street vendors to operate till 8 in the morning and added that sometimes the restriction put on the street vendors are relaxed looking after the condition of the market.
However, if the street vendors become a nuisance to the passers-by, the authority will always take up necessary measures, he added.
The Inspector then urged KEDO to take proper permission from the authority for the popcorn plaza so that other organisations can follow suit if they desire to venture into such businesses in the future.
