Scrap AFSPA call marks Meira Paibi Day

The demand for repealing AFSPA from the state reverberated as Nupi Samaj observed the 41st Meira Paibi Day at Kanto Sabal Leikai community hall on Wednesday.
Speaking at the commemorative event, Nupi Samaj founder president Th Ramani recalled how security forces killed several innocent civilians and raped scores of women with impunity guaranteed under AFSPA, and said that politicians, who are speaking of serving the public, should do the needful to withdraw the Act from the state if they really love Manipur and its people.
Ramani also recounted the journey of Meira Paibi movement which started as a women's movement against drugs and alcohol in 1972-73 and how it stood against the atrocities of security forces when the common people of the state were left at the mercy of security forces.
Though extrajudicial killings have stopped, the draconian lawis still implemented in the state and people are not safe under the law.
Till date, no government leaders have tried to repeal the Act sincerely, she said.
AMKIL president in-charge Lourembam Nganbi, Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup president V Momon Leima, Nupi Samaj Churachandpur president Gurumayum Landhoni, Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup president Y Memma, Leimakhong Area Development Committee president RK Bimola and Khurkhul GP pradhan Irungbam Shanta attended the programme as presidium members.
Floral tributes were paid to the photos of Pebam Chaobi, Ningombam Momon and Khomdram Indumani, who played major role in the initiation of Meira Paibi movement.
