Imphal, June 25 2013:
Reacting to the State Cabinet's decision on taking over the Sana Konung (Royal Palace) for developing it into a historical monument, member of Steering Committee of Sana Konung AK Janaki has demanded the State government to develop the Langthabal Palace instead of Sana Konung.
Talking to media persons at Sana Konung here today, Janaki said that the government should revoke its decision to take over the Royal Palace.
The members of the Committee would guard the Palace day and night until the State Cabinet's decision is revoked.
The development of Sana Konung by shifting out the King from his Palace is a blunder on the part of the government, she averred.
She further said that the State government should actually develop the Langthabal Palace which was built at the time Manipur was an independent State.
This Palace is an important historical monument of the State, Janaki noted.
The present Sana Konung was built during the British period to ensure continuity of Monarchy in the State.
However, the Palace was listed as a private property of the King according to the Merger Agreement signed between Manipur and India in 1949, she asserted.
Janaki further contended that Sana Konung is still a living institution from where the King performs his responsibilities as the Customary Head of the State.
The Palace has been a platform for hill-valley unity, she added.
The Committee is strongly against the State government's plan to convert Sana Konung into a museum like structure and would oppose any step of the government to shift out the King from the present Palace, she affirmed.
