The first ever 5-day Zonal Mime Theatre Festival, 2010, organized by Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory, Imphal, kick-started today at Government Dance College, Palace Gate, Imphal, Manipur.
The festival has been supported and aided jointly by Ministry of Art and Culture, Government of India and Government of Manipur.
Participants include mime theatre groups from Assam, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh besides four host groups.
Speaking on the occasion today, Padmashree Niranjan Goswami who is the director of Indian Mime Theatre, Kolkata terms mime as a universal language.
Meanwhile, during this five-day long occasion Kalpataru Guha, a national awardee from West Bengal, Madhusudan, an SNA awardee from Andhra Pradesh, Moinul Haque, an SNA awardee from Assam, Nisabda Mime Group from Assam, H Tombi Sharma, a veteran mime group and Ekta group penta fusion team will give powerful mime performance during the festival.
The hearing and speaking impaired students of Manipur will be a special attraction of the festival.
The objective of this festival, according to the organizers, is to plug the gap that exists in the art of mime theatre.
