Imphal, March 24 2018:
For the first time in Manipur, non-operative device closure of a large hole in the heart (ASD) and non-operative Balloon Dilatation of a heart valve (Pulmonary Valve Stenosis) were performed successfully at the same time on a child at SKY Hospital, Imphal.
The child 3 years 10 months old, son of N Sonkumar from Thongju Boroi Makhong, Imphal East was born with two birth heart defects called Atrial Septal Defect (ASD, 14.5 mm large) and Severe Pulmonary Valve Stenosis (PS), said a statement issued by the PRO Roni of Sky Hospital and Research Centre.
Without closing the ASD and widening of the Pulmonary Stenosis, the child would not have survive long.
For such children with 2 birth heart defects, there are two treatment options (1) Open heart surgical closure of ASD and Pulmonary Valvotomy and (2) Non-operative Device closure of ASD and Balloon Dilatation of Pulmonary Valve Stenosis, said the statement.
Patient's parents opted for non-operative treatment strategy.
The procedure was performed under intravenous GA in two stages.
First the blocked / stenosed pulmonary valve was dilated with a 15 mm x 40 mm Tyshak Balloon (Canadian made) successfully.
This was followed by the 2nd phase to close the ASD with a 16 mm Amplatzer (American made) ASD Device.
The large ASD was closed successfully.
The child was discharged from the hospital on the 2nd day of the procedure, said the statement.
Dr L Shyamkishore, Chairman and Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital appealed to the people of Manipur and North Eastern India to consider such combined non-operative Device closure of holes (ASD & PDA) and Balloon Dilatation of Pulmonary Valvular Stenosis as an alternative to open heart surgery in selected cases.
