Imphal, December 22 2024:
Although the rainy season is over in Manipur, several pockets in the Imphal City are experiencing water logging due to broken water pipelines, left unattended by the department concerned.
On days when water is supplied by the PHE Department, busy thoroughfares in Paona market, one of the commercial hubs in the heart of the capital city, are inundated due to leakage from the damaged pipes, with the situation remaining unchanged owing to clogged drainage system.
The road stretch from Blue Bell Fashion store till Handloom House shop is the worst part of the city as the leaked water combined with the drainage waste remain on the road for days, leaving many disgusted.
The residents are also apprehensive of receiving contaminated water due to strong possibility of similar minor damages in the pipes supplying water to homes.
As such, majority of the consumers have resorted to purchasing package drinking water instead of consuming the department's water.
With the department not taking up the steps to maintain or repair the pipes, other key roads in the city are also facing the same issue.
Apart from Paona market, other localities/roadways facing artificial 'flooding' include the stretch from Uripok Canteen Corner till RIMS Road corner, Sayang road in Sagolband and the roads in Singjamei Chingamathak.
While some have been forcefully blacktopped, the water continues to flow through the newly blacktopped road as the underlying issue has not been fixed.
As such, posers are being raised over efficiency and preparedness of the PHE Department in repairing the damaged pipes, to at-least prevent wastage of water.
