Imphal, November 22 2021:
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) along with different transport associations/unions/societies, have decided to urge the state government and departments concerned to issue a gazette notification notifying the revised rates of passenger fares, freight and hiring charges of motor vehicles, taking into account of the inconveniences being faced by the common public and transporters.
This was announced by AMSU vice president Laishram Athouba during a One Day Open Public Discussion organised by the Union with regard to the high fares of passenger service vehicles, school vans and buses and the inconveniences faced by transporters, at the multipurpose hall of AMSU head office here on Monday.
Athouba said that the charges fixed by Transport Department in 2008 are no longer feasible in the present time, considering the inconveniences faced by the people.
The rising prices of fuel and daily items are also forcing the transporters to increase the fares.
On the other hand, students and the general public without private vehicles are facing the brunt.
As there is the need to reduce the fares to around 50 percent, the open public discussion was held along with associations of passenger service vehicles, school vans and buses.
The vice president informed that a decision was taken to prevail upon the transport department to provide incentive schemes for private schools to bonafide transporters, as announced by the government.
It was also agreed to give 50 per cent concession on the fares charged from school/college/university students wearing uniform or identity cards.
A Joint Committee will be formed for translating the aforementioned into action.
In addition, it was decided to urge the state government to formulate a transport policy to look into the possibility of lowering the rising fuel prices, he conveyed.
The discussion was attended by AMSU advisor Thokchom Suresh; Burma-Sugnu Bus Owners' Union president Chanambam Ibotombi and JACPP (Auto Association) president Laikhuram Somorendro as presidium members.
