Meet resolves to protect Chakpi

Along with constituting a new body called Chakpi Rivers Protection and Development Society (CRPDS), Chandel District, a day-long consultative meeting on protection and eradication of illegal fishing in Chakpi River and its tributaries has decided to safeguard and protect the River and its tributaries from illegal fishing using explosive devices, electrical dynamo and chemicals like bleaching powder.
According to a statement of Chakpi Rivers Protection and Development Society (CRPDS), Chandel District signed jointly by its Secretary KI Wellee and Chairman Ps Ngamnung Anal, the consultative meeting convened by People's Development Organization, Chandel agreed and resolved to entrust the village authority to ban or prohibit using explosive devices, electrical dynamo and chemicals like bleaching powder within the areas or jurisdiction defined in the meeting.
According to the release, the portion of Chakpi River and its tributaries have been divided into 20 areas where the stretch of Chakpi River alone occupied thirteen areas beginning from the original source and extending till Imphal river basin, a meeting point of Chakpi river and Imphal river at Serou while the remaining areas/ jurisdiction cover some of the tributaries or streams including Duhan, Kana, Dujang, Duchol, Khumzolok, Malelok, Majam Lok and Khuwngthum.
The release also stated that a fine of Rs 5000 will be imposed against any individual or groups violating the prohibition order.
A village Authority who failed to ban or prohibit individuals from illegal fishing in their jurisdiction shall also be fined a sum of Rs 5000 as penalty against dereliction of duty.
It is also stated that no chemicals, poisonous substances, explosive devices, will be allowed to sell in Chandel and appealed to the public to maintain hygiene and sanitation in and around Chakpi River.
The meeting while entrusting the newly formed committee on Chakpi Rivers Protection and Development Society (CRPDS) Chandel District to organize awareness campaign on preservation of fishes, submission of the resolution to the DC Chandel, also elected seventeen Executive members of the Committee.
