State joins celebration of International Yoga Day
Source: Chronicle News Service / DIPR

Imphal, June 21 2024: As celebrated across the world annually on June 21 following its adoption by the United Nations in 2014, the International Day of Yoga was celebrated in the state, including at the Raj Bhavan, here, on Friday.

This year's theme 'Yoga for Self and Society' emphasises yoga's vital role in fostering individual wellbeing and social harmony.

During the observance, Governor Anusuiya Uikey practiced yoga asanas with officers, staff and security personnel of the Raj Bhavan in the morning.

After the session, the Governor encouraged the people of Manipur to practice yoga daily so as to maintain a healthy and balance lifestyle, as propounded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She said that the benefit of yoga in our health is worth mentioning and therefore, all the people should understand the idea of yoga and its practices for our health and wellbeing.

Meanwhile, chief minister N Biren Singh attended the 10th edition of International Yoga Day as the chief guest at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium, here, on Friday.

Addressing the participants, CM Biren said that the current generation is like a "pus-filled, terminally ill" community awaiting its demise, thereby entailing efforts at the individual level and collectively to remove the "pus" for a vigorous life.

Affirming that the government will pave the way and sacrifice for the people to live a life without any threat, he also noted that the future generation is facing a turning point ahead of their whole lives.

If their future could be safe and secure, it would be best but if they are unable to act without the emotional and political influence, any attention on the core issues would be deflected.

One must not forget the lesson taught by the battle in Mahabharata, the Seven Years' Devastation and others mentioned in the history of Manipur.

We also need to understand why the current generation is sceptical of themselves, he stressed.

CM Biren also mentioned India's clear stance in the meeting of United Nations Human Rights Council held recently, that influx of people from Myanmar into India s North-eastern states and the challenge of transnational crimes such as drug and human trafficking continue to remain an area of grave concern.

Thus, he urged some of the central leaders to stop politicising the Manipur issue and giving lip service, instead of sincerely working to come up with a solution.

Terming random comments posted on social media platforms as unfortunate, the CM said that the society is recently exhibiting behaviours of lacking respect towards elder and basic decorum, implying presence of some people with low moral bottom line.

The government cannot blast or publish news of every single of its activities.

All 60 MLAs, after being elected to power, have their own agendas.

Some want to push forward their own agenda, while others want any government matter to be made public at all cost which, in turn, would alert the enemy.

We should always be vigilant to save ourselves from falling in such traps, he said.

The CM then stated that yoga is a gift given to the world by our country.

The United Nations gave approval to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 every year from 2014 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at the United Nations General Assembly, he reminded.

Biren then emphasised that practicing yoga not only makes a healthy body and healthy mind but also helps in building a healthier and well-disciplined society.

Mentioning about significance of yoga in our lives, he said that manyschools, colleges and institutions have included yoga in their curriculum.

Highlighting the benefits of consuming millets, he said that it is highly nutritious to the body and can be consumed in different forms.

By promoting the consumption of millets, we are not only enhancing our personal health but also contributing to sustainability of our planet.

The CM also highlighted that the government will promote and spread awareness about the benefits of millets among the public.

Organised by Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), the event was attended by Cabinet ministers, MP (Rajya Sabha) titular king Leisemba Sanajaoba, MLAs, students and officials of YAS.
