SP clarifiess on Leimaram firing, rescue reports

Bishnupur district's Superintendent of Police (SP) has issued a clarification regarding recent media reports that claimed 75 women were rescued from Kuki militants after a two-hour gunfight in Manipur on the night of May 16, 2024 .
The SP confirmed that these reports are untrue, and provided the actual incident details as submitted by the officer in-charge of Nambol police station.
A statement from the SP said that as per official report, Meira Paibis of Leimaram Waroiching and nearby villagers had been protesting against the withdrawal of the 5/9 Gorkha Regiment from Waroiching since the morning of May 13 .
On May 16, from around 5 pm to 7 pm, the villagers ended their protest and dispersed to safe areas of their villages following mutual understanding.
Later that at approximately 10 pm, the district police conducting checks at Ichum Kom police post came under fire.
Unknown armed miscreants fired three rounds from the direction of Waroiching (Kuki village) towards the valley.
About 10 minutes later, another 7-8 rounds were fired from the Agijang Hill side towards the valley.
Police personnel at Ichum Kom Junction responded by firing three rounds towards the hill.
At about 10.30 pm, a team from the 5/9 Gorkha Regiment, led by a major and the post commander at Waroiching, arrived at Ichum Kom Junction.
They were joined by COs of 5/9 Gorkha Regiment and 33 Assam Rifles.
After confirming the presence of approximately 5-6 armed miscreants in the Agijang hill area (Kuki village), the Gorkha Regiment personnel fired about 15 rounds of Para illumination mortars towards the hill.
The team from the Gorkha Regiment stationed at Irengbam Awang Leikai IRB post also retaliated by bring some rounds.
The combined efforts of the 5/9 Gorkha Regiment, 33 Assam Rifles, and district police successfully brought the situation under control.
The SP emphasised that there was no incident involving the rescue of 75 women on that day, as they had already dispersed before the conflict occurred.
