Public hearing on violence against women held

A one day public hearing on violence against women in Manipur organised by Women Action for Development (WAD) was held today at the conference hall of State Guest House, Sanjenthong.
Th Surbala, Retired District and Session Judge, Prof N Pramodini, Director, Women's Study Centre, Manipur University; Dr N Pramod, Associate Professor, LMS Law College and Th Bandana, Assistant Public Prosecutor, Government of Manipur were present as jury members.
A total of 16 cases including eight rape cases, four rapes and murders, two suspicious deaths, one murder and one attempt to rape were presented at the public hearing.
In her key note address, Sobita Mangsatabam, WAD secretary said that the public hearing was held to seek collective effort to advance gender equality and also to combat violence against women.
She further said that the public hearing sought full insurance of International standards such as the International Women's Treaty, UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence and Discrimination against Women and the Platform for Action of the Beijing Fourth World Conference on Women.
"We believe that the Government particularly criminal justice institutions should lead to bridge the confidence of those people who have faith in these institutions.
Listening to the narratives of violence against women can make sure that the needs of the victims of violence against women are addressed and their rights are protected through the passage of laws.
We need observations and recommendations of members of the jury to translate the narratives of crimes against women into action," she said.
Three representatives from Manipur police also attended the public hearing.
They presented overall cases in respect of violence against women that have been registered at various police stations in the State.
