Senapati, January 15 2025:
Naga Women's Union (NWU) condemned the thrashing of six innocent women on January 12 evening at Maremai village.
In a release, NWU reminded all concerned that since inception, it has been advocating for ending all forms of violence against women.
Based on the aims and objectives, incorporated in the NWU's preamble of the constitution number 1 and 2, the union issued the condemnation in the strongest term to address the issue of affecting women and to protect and promote human rights, the release added.
The union condemned the barbaric physical assault as such acts are against the protocol of respecting the women's chastity.
While declaring that such acts of violence against women would not be tolerated under all circumstances, it called the Maremai incident grave violation of the global standard of human rights and Naga customary ethics.
As information shared by the victims and the Maremai villagers who witnessed the incident, some cadres of the NSCN (IM) committed the atrocities.
"Such untamed cadres involved in the crime should be given appropriate penalty according to degree of their crimes," NWU said.
It also urged the NSCN-IM leadership to initiate impartial inquiry into the incident and penalise perpetrators of the crime against women.
Liangmai Naga Council, Eastern Zone (LNC-EZ) also strongly condemned the inhuman attack at Marenmei Liangmai village, Senapati district.
The inhuman violence was committed by RK Remping, his grandsons and some armed NSCN-IM cadres on six women and two men, who were chased and beaten black and blue without any mercy, the release alleged, while adding that the atrocities committed to women is unimaginable and cowardly.
While extending solidarity to suffering of the victims, LNC-EZ also urged authority concerned to deliver justice to the victims at the earliest, and also called upon all right-thinking individuals and organisations to condemn violence committed against the women.
