Net ban eased; school, college closure extended

Imphal, September 12 2024:
The government has announced conditional and partial lifting of the internet ban in several districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching.
The ban, initially imposed on September 10, affecting all internet services, including mobile data and broadband, was intended to curb the spread of disinformation and prevent violence.
According to an order issued by coinmissioner (home) N Ashok Kumar on Thursday, broadband services (ILL and FTTH) have been conditionally restored.
However, strict terms must be adhered to, including restrictions on Wi-Fi hotspots, use of static IP addresses, and blocking of social media sites and VPNs.
Violations will result in penalties as per existing laws, the order said.
Meanwhile, the suspension of mobile internet data services remains in effect, as the government cited ongoing concerns over the Spread of false information and the mobilisation of agitators through social media platforms.
In a related development to the current situation the state, the department of education (S) and the higher and technical education department have issued separate orders stating that all government, aided and private schools and colleges will remain closed until September 14 .
