Hordrawon Festival begins amid vibrant cosmos bloom

The 3rd Hordrawon (Cosmos) Flower Festival began on Thursday at Paorei village of Chingai block, celebrating a vibrant bloom of cosmos flowers and the village's rich cultural heritage.
The opening of the four-day event drew many visitors from Ukhrul town and surrounding areas, eager to experience the beauty of the blooming flowers.
The attendees enjoyed local delicacies and musical performances showcasing the Tangkhuls' rich culture.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Jessami ADM/SDO P Duna Duo as chief guest, alongside Ukhrul SDCs/BOs Hanyo Luke Rungsung and Riamei Jang-mei as guests of honour.
In his address, Duna Duo highlighted the festival's potential to establish Paorei village as a notable tourist destination.
He emphasised the natural beauty of the village, noting the abundance of orchids and oak trees that complement the cosmos flowers.
"Nature offers Paorei village not just the beautiful cosmos but also plenty of orchids and oak trees which can help in developing it into a big tourist destination," he said.
Duo assured the community of his commitment to supporting the festival's growth, expressing his intention to contribute meaningfully to its future development.
He also proposed construction of cottages in the locality to accommodate tourists, while suggesting that such infrastructure would enhance the overall visitor experience.
Duo further urged the locals to adopt a more progressive approach to tourism, reminding them to embrace the changing needs of visitors, particularly in terms of hospitality services.
"My earnest suggestion is to break away from conservative concepts to boost tourism in our place," he said, emphasising the importance of understanding and meeting the expectations of tourists.
Festival Organising Committee chairman Chinaongam Yangya highlighted the significance of the festival celebrating beauty of cosmos bloom that signifies the retreating monsoon season in the village.
He also welcomed the attendees and sought support for the promotion of the festival.
Adding a unique flavour, a bodybuilding team from the Royal Gym led by its proprietor L Robert Meitei and instructor Wungreithei showcased a male physique performance.
"We showcase this performance to encourage youth to embrace healthy lifestyle free from drugs," Wungreithei said, adding that any youth willing to join them for a healthy lifestyle is welcome.
Various other performances including musical displays and traditional shows were also presented.
As part of the festival, a variety of exciting events will take place, including the Hordrawon Football Tournament and a painting competition.
Additionally, there will be a sales and exhibitions event featuring organic vegetables, seasonal delicacies, flowers, and handicraft items during the celebration, which will conclude on October 14 .
